Tattoo aftercare in Melbourne: a healing timeline

Melbourne's four-seasons-a-day weather makes aftercare a bit trickier than most cities. Here's the routine we send every client home with.

A tattoo is essentially a controlled wound, and like any wound it heals in stages. The cleaner and more consistent you are in the first few weeks, the better the final result.

Days 1–3: the wrap and first washes

Your artist will send you home in either a clear adhesive film or a traditional cling wrap. Leave it on for the time you're told. After removal, wash gently twice a day with unscented soap, pat dry with a clean towel, and apply a very thin layer of aftercare balm.

Days 4–10: peeling and itching

The skin will flake like a light sunburn — this is normal. Do not pick or scratch. Keep moisturising lightly. The tattoo can look cloudy or dull during this stage; the colour returns underneath.

Weeks 2–4: settling in

  • No direct sun — Melbourne UV is harsh even on cloudy days.
  • No pools, ocean, baths, or hot showers on the tattoo.
  • Skip the gym for the first week, longer if the tattoo is on a high-friction area.
  • Wear loose, breathable clothing over the area.

Long term

Once fully healed, the single biggest factor in how your tattoo ages is sun protection. SPF 50 on every exposed tattoo, every time you'll be out in the sun for more than a few minutes. Done consistently, your tattoo will still look sharp in twenty years.
