How to prepare for your first tattoo appointment

Most of the discomfort of a first tattoo comes from not knowing what to expect. Here's how we prep our clients at Black Sparrow.

Your first tattoo will stay with you for the rest of your life — the appointment itself only lasts a few hours. A bit of preparation goes a long way toward making the session calm, comfortable, and producing a tattoo you're proud of.

The week before

  • Drink more water than usual — well hydrated skin takes ink better.
  • Don't sunbake or burn the area you're getting tattooed.
  • Avoid blood thinners like aspirin or heavy alcohol the night before.
  • Get a full night's sleep — being rested makes the session easier.

The day of your appointment

Eat a proper meal an hour or two before you arrive. Bring a snack and a drink for longer sessions. Wear loose clothing that gives your artist clean access to the area without you needing to undress.

Arrive a few minutes early. You'll review the stencil with your artist, place it together, and only start once you're happy with the size and position. Nothing goes on skin until you sign off.

During the session

Breathe normally and let your artist know if you need a break. Most people find the first ten minutes the toughest — the body adjusts quickly. Phones, headphones, and a book are all welcome.

Aftercare in the first 48 hours

  • Leave the wrap on for the time your artist tells you — usually a few hours.
  • Wash gently with unscented soap and lukewarm water.
  • Apply a thin layer of the aftercare balm we send you home with.
  • Keep it out of the sun, the pool, and the gym for the first two weeks.

If anything feels off in the first few days, message the studio — we'd much rather answer a small question than have you wait it out.
